In 1984, while flying from Paris to London on an Air France flight, English actress and singer Jane Birkin dropped her straw bag, scattering her belongings across the aisle. Sitting next to her was Jean-Louis Dumas, then the executive chairman of Hermès. He suggested she replace her bag with a custom Hermes design, featuring compartments large enough to hold everything she needed. Birkin, a mother of three, remarked that practical bags were never elegant. As they flew over the English Channel, the two exchanged ideas and sketches, which ultimately led to the creation of the iconic custom Birkin bag. This handbag has become so popular that it can take months or even years to acquire. “I think I sketched it on the sick bag — or the ‘don’t-be-sick’ bag,” Birkin, who passed away last year, recalled. “And he said, ‘I’ll make it for you.’” Dumas drew inspiration from Hermès’s original Haut à Courroies bag, designed in the late 1800s to carry riding boots and saddles, and incorporated its trapezoidal shape and top flap into the prototype.

This autumn, Pierre Hardy, Hermès’s creative director of high jewellery, reveals the most extravagant custom Birkin yet: a jewelled version of the classic bag, featuring asymmetrical panels of white or yellow gold, designed to resemble crocodile leather. Drawing inspiration from Hermès’s archive of over 75,000 silk colours, Hardy crafted a stunning gradient by adorning the bag with nearly 3,000 diamonds, amethysts, spessartite garnets, aquamarines, and sapphires in shades of pale blue, yellow, and pink. “Colour is an endless resource,” says Hardy, who studied at L’Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan in Paris. “Rather than limiting myself, I chose to embrace boundless possibilities to create a truly unique piece that could even help those who want to personalize Hermes designs.”
