Turns out Victoria Beckham was actually onto something with her plentiful Birkin bag collection
In fashion-speak, investment pieces are those designed to last a lifetime and to never really date...
Or at least that's the line you trot out to your partner when he asks about your most recent Net-a-Porter delivery - right? But let's be truthful here, there are really only a handful of true fashion investment pieces - i.e. classic items that could potentially hold their value if resold.
So if you're one of the lucky few who own a highly Hermès Birkin bag, you'll cheer at what we're about to say next. According to a study published by luxury good consignment store Baghunter, the fabled carryall favoured by Victoria Beckham and Kim Kardashian is actually more valuable than S&P 500 (the stock market) and gold. Yes, gold.
In a 35-year study carried out from 1980 to 2015, Baghunter compared three different types of investments - stock trading, gold and the Birkin - and found that compared S&P 500 and gold, the bag named after Jane Birkin has actually increasedin value by an average of 14.2 per cent per year.
Considering that prices of Birkins start from around USD$10,000 and an extremely rare, second-hand pink crocodile-skin number recently sold for $290k at auction, we'd say that's a pretty neat return on investment.
Looks like it's time to hotfoot it to your nearest Hermès store... we'll probably see you there.
